What does mother mean to you?

To me, the essence of mother embodies nurturing. That essence resides within each of us, guiding us to nurture ourselves, our loved ones, and the planet. That same essence is found in each of these things, in return we find nourishment through our bodies, our connections, and our environment.

Morning ritual?

Big yummy breakfast. A cuddle from my housemates dog. Then a surf with friends, followed by a group coffee at the local.

What makes a great photo?

Light, texture and emotion. The word candid is now perceived as cheesy, but I’m a sucker for authenticity. I recently purchased a 70-200mm zoom lens, which allows me to take a step back from the subject, which eleviates the intimidation of a lens in your face. As a result, it allows for more natural emotions to come through. I love capturing true and raw emotion, I feel like those images hit my heart in a special way and have the most impact.

You’re an avid surfer. Tell us in 3 words your surfing story.

Novice, but eager!

Are your cycles of creativity changing with the Seasons? / OR your seasons as a woman?

Without a doubt! My cycles of creativity have morphed and changed throughout the seasons of my life. I can categorise the seasons by the mediums in which I’ve created with. For many years I focused on collaging, and used to create them full time, now that love has blossomed into focusing purely on my photography, I’m excited for the next season where I feel I’ll be intertwining both mediums more often.

What is it about your practice that you’re doing differently now?

Believing in myself more. Like anyone diving headfirst into something new, I was riddled with self doubt and imposter syndrome. I’m focusing on shooting and creating for the love of it, and accepting whatever I produce and just having fun with the creative process and connecting with beautiful humans along the way.

How is colour significant for your work?

Colour has always been prevalent in any creative practice I’ve dabbled in. I’ve grown up in a very colourful household. My mum and her mum are incredible artists who produce works that are bursting with colour. Therefore I’ve always been inspired and encouraged to work with colour. I think my love for colour is so deeply embedded within me that I can’t explain the draw to it, it’s such a beautiful and happy expression. Therefore I think I subconsciously shoot it, and emphasise it in my work.

Who were you photography heroes growing up?

Alexandra Valenti! I had a print of hers on my wall growing up and was obsesssssed with her beautiful film photography and use of mixed mediums. The colours in her film photography just reiterated my love for colour. And my boss! Tom Rawlins! I remember looking through a wedding album he had shot in 2018, I couldn’t get over how beautifully he captured the day, and that he was making a successful career out of photography. My memory is pretty shocking but I remember this moment so clearly. Fast forward, and I’m working for him, learning from him each day. Which is the wildest thing!! He is like my little photography fairy godfather. I feel so lucky.

Who and what inspires you now?

The beautiful landscapes and people that surround us here on the sunny coast inspire me every day. The way the light hits the mountains on my drive home from work, the way the sun makes the water glitter on sunrise. The textures on an old man’s hands who waves on a morning stroll on the beach.

Listening to?

I’ve been listening to Offthewally on repeat lately. His stuff really sets the mood.

Food from the Gods & Goddesses?

That fruit toast with fig, goats cheese and olive oil you lovingly prepared for that incredible feast shoot we recently created together. OMG. Drooling just thinking about it. ( I hear you and I second you Rosie ~ it’s all about the Oleo of Monemvasia!)

Early bird or night owl?

Early bird gets the worm!

What excites you and is presenting itself in your creative process currently?

I think that self assurance I was just talking about and the reminder to just enjoy the process has been a beautiful thing that’s rearing its head in my process lately. And my new zoom lens is sooo much fun and produces the most interesting shots!

Who & what supports you in your creative process?

I feel so deeply supported by the people surrounding me. I feel so grateful to have such a deeply loving network of friends, family and peers around me that encourage me to continue to express myself creatively without any judgment or fear.
